THE DECEPTION

The DeceptionReviewed by Pat Howard in Romance Forever

A long held grievance, a murder, and a forced marriage are the elements that form The Deception, a Regency story told in the first person.
Kate’s father has been brutally murdered. She knows it—even though the magistrate calls it was an “out of season” hunting accident. Kate goes to live with her Uncle Martin, Lord Charlwood, a strange sulky man who always appears to he harboring ulterior motives. After taking Kate and her cousin Louisa to London for the season, Uncle Martin arranges a situation in which it appears that a certain Adrian, Lord Greystone, has compromised Kate.
Kate and Adrian are soon forced to marry. After the
wedding, Adrian takes Kate to one of his lesser estates, where he deposits her for the next year. There, with only the couple who manage the estate for company, Kate must wile away the hours. Within the year, Adrian returns and takes Kate to live on his main estate—vowing that their sham marriage will become a real one in all areas.
Soon, Adrian’s brother Harry becomes involved in a major gambling debt. He seeks Kate’s help and in turn sets out to discover who killed her father. Meanwhile, Uncle Martin is infuriated by his own discovery that Adrain and Kate do have a happy marriage. Before the couple reach their happily ever after, there is some chicanery in the racing world, as well as Uncle Martin’s incestuous plans, to overcome.
The many sub-plots are the glue that binds this book into a fascinating story A definite page-turner, TheDeception is a classic. Be sure to put it on your must read list.
