HIS LORDSHIP'S DESIRE
The heroine of His Lordship’s Desire
is Diana Sherwood. She has grown up living with her
mother, Louisa, in a cottage on the estate of the Earl
of Standish. Diana’s father was killed in the
Peninsula War and the generosity of the Countess of
Standish, Louisa’s cousin, allows the Sherwoods
to escape the poverty that would otherwise have been
their lot.
The hero of His Lordship’s Desire
is Alex Devize, who succeeds his father as Earl of Standish.
Alex and Diana fall in love when they are very young
and they plan to marry when they are older. Neither
one of them takes into account their vastly different
social and economic stations. They are Alex-and-Dee
and that is enough for them.
Then Alex has a chance to join the military,
something he has wanted all his life. When his father
finally relents and buys him a commission, he can’t
turn it down. He leaves for the Peninsula, fully expecting
to marry Diana when he returns. For the second time
in her life, Diana is abandoned for the military by
a man she loves and trusts. Her feelings for Alex change
when this happens.
The book opens with Alex’s return
from the war. The novel is about the emotional scars
that divide Alex and Diana and about how they are able
to heal and eventually fulfill their great mutual love.
