TO THE CASTLE
To
The Castle is the story of Nell de Bonville,
who lives in England during the twelfth century. It
is a time of civil war, when many factions are vying
for power in the country. Nell is the daughter of the
Earl of Lincoln, but she has spent the formative years
of her life in the convent, expecting to become a nun.
It is a tremendous shock to her when her elder sister
dies and she learns that her father expects her to take
Sybilla’s place in a dynastic marriage to Roger
de Roche, the grandson of the Earl of Wiltshire.
For his part, Roger has been brought
up to expect that his
marriage will be for power and position, not for love.
He is, after all, his grandfather’s heir, and
he perfectly understands the power that his family will
gain by uniting the earldoms of Lincoln and Wiltshire.
The novel follows these two young people
as they start their marriage as strangers and end up
as passionate lovers. Their story is set against the
backdrop of war and a family secret that rocks Roger’s
world.
